SARASWATHI SHISHUVIHAR SCHOOL, IndiaThe school was built in 1957 and today has approximately 160 children in 4 classes (ages 5 to 9) and a nursery class. There are 5 teachers. The school is recognised by the government which pays the salaries of 2 of the 5 teachers. The government is not able provide any further financial support to the school. The school comprises 2 classrooms in which the 5 classes take place. A curtain is used in each room to make a partition. Currently there is insufficient space in these 2 classrooms for all the children to sit and listen to the lessons. The children and teachers share one toilet. In August 2002 a group of local volunteers formed the Mahatma Gandhi Education & Service Trust and took over the management of the school. The Trust now provides a mid-day meal for the 160 children in the 4 classes (ages 5 to 9) and milk and biscuits for the children in the nursery class. This costs Rs.700 (EUR 13) per day. Many more children now attend school regularly because they receive this midday meal as their parents, who struggle to feed the children adequately, encourage this attendance. In addition, the concentration levels of the children are greatly improved due to this regular meal. The Trust actively seeks public donations and from this is able to pay the salaries of the other 3 school teachers. The school owns the surrounding grounds but at the moment this is not put to any use. The urgent needs of the school are: - Funds to continue to provide lunch for the students - Extra toilets for the children and staff; - 2 extra classrooms; - To build a wall or fence around the school. The approximate cost for these is Rs. 500 000 (EUR 9300) The Trust has been trying for some time raise this sum of money, but so far its efforts have yielded little fruitful result. The students, teachers of the Saraswathi Shishuvihar School and the Mahatma Gandhi Education & Service Trust would be very grateful to you for any support. Entered on website 26th September 2007
